is a bold exploration of instinct, spontaneity, and the interconnected nature of life. Inspired by the purity of children’s unpremeditated drawings, Hook set out to combine this sense of freedom with the depth of his own artistic experience. To achieve this, he stripped his practice back to its foundations, deconstructing technique and judgement to rediscover the essence of mark-making.
The series draws on historical art influences, referencing Vladimir Tretchikoff’s unconventional use of colour and Henri Rousseau’s dreamlike compositions and stylised patterns. The result is a visual language that feels at once childlike, mysterious, and profoundly original.

These captivating new original works are rooted in Hook’s encounters with the desert. From Cairo to the Sahara, he was captivated by the life, clarity, and celestial rhythms of these vast landscapes, and by the Bedouins’ ability to navigate them through wind, stars, and shifting dunes. These impressions are embedded in the collection, alongside imagined desert figures created with the aid of AI as part of his experimental process.
