David Shrigley Biography

Born in Macclesfield, Cheshire, David Shrigley (b. 1968) began his artistic journey by publishing books of his quirky doodles and sketches immediately after graduating from the Glasgow School of Art. Although his practices soon involved a multitude of mediums such as photography, sculpture and public installations, it is the naïve art style of his drawings and art prints that he is best known for. Often including absurd statements and dry captions, Shrigley’s crude imagery is celebrated for its quick wit and playful nature.

Shrigley was nominated for the prestigious Turner Prize in 2013, and in 2016 was commissioned to create a sculpture for Trafalgar Square’s Fourth Plinth project. The gigantic elongated thumbs-up was a prime example of his ethos, creating amusing and bizarre works in the hope that his audience’s love of art will save the world. His works can be found in prominent collections internationally, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, Tate Britain, and the National Gallery of Victoria.
