James Joyce

British artist James Joyce has built an international reputation for his bold, graphic works that dismantle and reconfigure the familiar. Working across painting, screen printing and drawing, he has developed a striking visual language built on typographic forms and everyday symbols, and his exploration of contemporary iconography has led to some of the most distinctive artworks of the last decade. His flat planes of colour, carefully balanced compositions and minimalistic approach belie the emotional impact of his work, which resonates far beyond its graphic surface.

A defining moment in his career came in 2015, when Joyce’s rotating video installation of his own signature work, Perseverance in the Face of Absurdity, was featured as a central piece in Banksy’s landmark exhibition Dismaland and chosen by Banksy as the signature image for the event. Seen by hundreds of thousands of visitors worldwide, it placed Joyce at the heart of one of the most talked-about art shows of the decade. The piece remains one of his most recognisable creations and forms the basis of the collection now presented by Clarendon Fine Art.

With his ongoing series of dismantled face paintings, Joyce draws attention to the absurdity, overuse and ultimate fragility of the language of social media. While his works are visually immediate, they are also conceptually layered and reflect both the playfulness and the disorientation of living in a hyper-connected world.

James Joyce Biography

By subverting icons of popular and digital culture, Joyce highlights both their simplicity and their cultural weight. From his celebrated Like paintings, which reimagine Robert Indiana’s 1960s “LOVE” for the internet age and culminated in the landmark 100 Likes exhibition at Colette, Paris, to his ongoing series of dismantled face paintings, Joyce draws attention to the absurdity, overuse and ultimate fragility of the language of social media. While his works are visually immediate, they are also conceptually layered and reflect both the playfulness and the disorientation of living in a hyper-connected world.

Witty, thought-provoking and recognisable, Joyce’s work offers a unique commentary on the words and images that define our times. His practice is characterised by precision and clarity, and his ability to distil complex ideas into deceptively simple forms has won him widespread acclaim. As well as exhibiting at prestigious institutions including the Royal Academy of Arts, he has paintings and editions in collections worldwide and has featured in numerous international publications. His rotating video installation, Perseverance in the Face of Absurdity, was a central piece in Banksy’s landmark 2015 exhibition Dismaland and was chosen by Banksy as the signature image for the event.
