Figures In The Park
POA
Laurence Stephen Lowry, R.A. (1887-1976)
Figures in the Park, 1976
Offset lithograph on wove paper, after the original painting Figures in the Park, 1964 (Collection: Private collection)
Signed ‘L.S. Lowry’ lower right and numbered from the edition of 100
Size: 16 x 12 in. (40.6 x 30.4 cm)
(Please enquire for availability)
The present work is one of the rarest L.S. Lowry prints, one of only 100 signed copies, compared to the more usual print runs of 350 or 700 editions. Lowry personally expressed a desire to keep the print run small as this piece was of particular importance to him, and one of his personal favourites. It is therefore one of the most collectible and sought-after limited editions.
The original painting took him over two years to finish and was based on his observations of the characters he saw in Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester. It seems almost like a magnified section of one of his larger industrial paintings – his matchstick men brought into focus in a closely-cropped composition. It is immediately recognisable as a Lowry, both in style and colour palette.
Lowry had incredible skills of observation, as evidenced by the details he recalled when later speaking about this piece: “The poor cripple was always around when I visited the gardens” said Lowry, “until the hard winter about 1968 then I never saw him again, I think the cold must have killed him off. You see that lady in the foreground, she was a university lecturer, who must have had a brainstorm, sometimes she would speak so beautifully and with such intelligence, the next moment she would blaspheme so vehemently everyone nearby would move off. She verbally attacked the man standing in the background so much, that he just had to walk away. Now that man in the middle distance used to walk his dog every day whatever the weather. I never went to the park when he wasn't there with his little Scottie dog. The child standing by the cripple was so often alone, poor little thing... always smiling yet his mother nowhere to be seen.”
