Whilst British artist L.S. Lowry is perhaps best-known for his industrial townscapes, he also produced many seascapes over the course of his career. These works vary remarkably in content and feeling, from enigmatic and ominously bare depictions that verge on the abstract, to lively scenes of leisurely seaside life.
As a child, Lowry would spend family holidays at Rhyl, North Wales, Lytham St. Anne’s, or the Fydle Coast in Lancashire, and he recalled drawing boats and ships from the age of 8. He often spoke of his affinity for the sea and ships, once remarking: “It's the Battle of Life - the turbulence of the sea - and life's pretty turbulent, isn't it? I am very fond of the sea, of course, I have been fond of the sea all my life: how wonderful it is, yet how terrible it is.” In contrast to the volatility Lowry clearly associated with the tempestuous seas of Great Britain, this painting is uncharacteristically cheery, and devoid of human life, therefore standing in stark contrast to his heavily populated industrial cityscapes.
The original Sailboats painting was produced in 1912 and is one of Lowry’s earliest known paintings. It was owned by a member of Lowry’s extended family, the artist’s second cousin, Geoffrey Shephard, and was reportedly one of the only paintings the artist’s mother ever admired. Lowry had gifted the painting to the parents of Shephard upon their wedding in 1920. Upon Shephard’s death in 2016 it was revealed that he wished for this painting and two other works he owned by Lowry to be donated to The Lowry Museum in Salford. It is in this collection that the work now resides.
The Chief Executive of The Lowry – Julia Fawcett OBE – said of this donation: “Given their family provenance, these works are an incredibly special addition to our collection.” She added of this particular work: “Sailing Boats was painted when Lowry was just 25 years old – many years before the critical and widespread recognition he went on to achieve. It depicts a subject matter we know Lowry’s mother approved of – and she wasn’t always that forthcoming with her approval – so I’m sure it was highly valued as a personal wedding gift.”
