Unlike many of the artist’s ‘imaginary composite’ industrial scenes, Lowry has actually named the location of this current work: Broughton, a city in northern Wales. This original lithograph, unusually, was based on a preliminary pencil drawing of the entitled Houses in Broughton produced in 1937. The compositional similarities of the works are such that it is evident that Lowry still had the drawing in his personal collection 32 years later when this print was made, and implies the image was of special significance to him.
In comparison to the offset lithographs of Lowry’s paintings, which are essentially photomechanical reproductions of the original oil paintings, the Ganymed lithographs are considered ‘original’ works, in so far that Lowry actually drew the design upon a plate, which was then used for the printing of the work. Thus, rather than a high-resolution scan of an original painting, the present lithograph is unique as it has been printed by hand from Lowry’s design. As with the present work, all of L.S. Lowry’s lithographs are printed in black and white with a tinted background. They have a significantly smaller edition size than the offset lithographs, limited to only 75 compared with the much larger editions of 350, 550, 750 or even 850 of the latter.
